August is upon us, and that means that it is the seaside season. I joined Maudie Furry and her large family as they took a day-trip up the coast in their charabanc. “We like to visit the beach,” explained Maudie. “Abs wants to build sandcastles. So does Mottle, actually.”

We arrived in Porttaddle just in time for lunch. Most of the party went to beach huts to get changed, while Maudie spread a big travelling rug on the sand and set out the picnic. The spread included savoury snacks like sausage rolls and pork pies, as well as cakes and buns. After lunch, Mottle and Bunny took Abs paddling, then they built the aforementioned sandcastles. Maudie and Morris Morys (who drove the charabanc)  went for a walk along the promenade. Other members of the party, such as Roger Rottweiler, lay on deck chairs for a nice snooze. I broke away from the party to speak to other beach-goers.

I like the feel of sand between my toes. Timothy, van pattern kitten.

I don’t like the feel of sand in my swimming trunks. Tony, van pattern kitten.

Come and see, I found a rock pool! Come and see! Tina, poodle puppy.

This reporter is not ashamed to admit he had a lovely time, including a refreshing ice cream, but is a bit embarrassed to admit he got a little sun burned.
